Image appears on both sides. Adorned with a lovely combination of stylized imagery from two eras, including the curvilinear look of art nouveau and art deco geometrics, this flapper purse likely dates from the late 1920s or early 1930s. Exceptionally well-made by the mesh masters, Whiting & Davis, the hand-sewn apricot silk interior is pristine and includes a pocket. Trimmed with a 6-point van dyke triangle fringe, the purse fastens tightly and is suspended on a 12-inch link chain. Signed with Whiting & Davis imprint in two places on the interior frame. Whiting & Davis launched its mesh bag line in 1924 but didn't actually run an advertisement for these "all the rage" accessories until 1927.
By then, the inventiveness of the mesh fabric and range of exquisite designs had made its mark in women's fashion. This elegant bag is a lovely example of the most appealing characteristics of the style.
